Inspired by the success of the London 2012 Olympics Games Makers, Silverstone recruited 160 volunteers to lend their support at two of the biggest motor sport events on the UK sporting calendar this year; F1 Santander British Grand Prix and the Hertz MotoGP British Grand Prix. This built on the success from 2013 where 105 volunteers were selected from over 1000 applicants across the UK and Europe.
Race Makers are strategically positioned around the venue to help the thousands of fans coming through the Silverstone gates over the two race weekends. Feedback following the events in 2013 was extremely positive and the Silverstone fans greatly appreciated the friendly faces and helpful nature of all the volunteers.
In their distinctive blue and red uniform the Race Makers were a visible and welcoming addition to the safety and enjoyment over both race weekends.
The Silverstone Race circuit management wanted to develop the role of the Race Maker for 2014 to include a crowd safety response to compliment the excellent crowd stewarding and security response provided by G4S.
The Tess Group were recommended to the circuit by G4S following their customer service training provided to the core G4S security team at Silverstone. Between April and June 2014, we attended the recruitment and selection events to provide a bespoke classroom training in spectator safety at events. This was complimented by a series of experiential training scenarios around the circuit utilising the Grandstands to simulate typical crowd events that may occur. The Race Makers were coached in how to provide a top class customer service experience whilst being able to respond to safety and security duties.
In support of this we also provided coaching and assessment alongside both events to qualify each Race Maker for their level 2 certificate as a Spectator Safety Steward.
Typical responses from the Race Makers who took part in our training was that it was “fun, informative and gave them confidence”.
It is fair to say that the vision and foresight of Silverstone circuit to develop the Race Maker programme has been a massive success.
Our compliance and safety training programmes can be bespoke to any crowd safety environment. We have a vast experience supporting sporting venues and events through the UK.
